Emergency Medicine Student Symposium
Today our country finds its health care system in a state of emergency amid an unstable economy and ever-increasing medical care costs. Health care coverage and its associated costs are an immediate concern for many. Increasing numbers of patients are turning to emergency rooms as their final resort for care because they cannot afford consistent primary care. However, ERs across the country are closing at an alarming rate, and the remaining ones struggle to keep up with the increased patient load. With such increasing demands, it is crucial to staff emergency departments with emergency medicine (EM) physicians who are experts in the various areas of EM to provide quick and accurate diagnosis, and more importantly effective treatment.
In light of these increasing demands for excellence and precision, the Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG) at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine is proud to present its 4th biennial symposium for EM physicians, residents and medical students. The purpose of this symposium is to promote the culture of expertise in the management of specific emergencies among current and future healthcare providers. Since EM physicians now provide a large share of care that has formerly been the realm of other specialties, we are promoting student awareness of the many discrete areas of expertise within EM.
This symposium will begin the critical process of educating and training current and future generations of health care providers and will allow these individuals to obtain the knowledge necessary in specific areas of proficiency. The symposium will consist of a series of didactic sessions and skills workshops that will address the objectives of the conference. Lectures and workshops will cover topics such as Sports Medicine, Ultrasound, Wilderness, Pediatrics, Toxicology, and Disaster Medicine subspecialties/fellowships. In addition, the hardships, challenges, and opportunities of international medicine for EM physicians and the proper response to diving emergencies will also be discussed. This symposium will also provide the opportunity to assess advances in medical research through a research panel, obtain information about preparing for a career in EM through a residency panel, and much more.
Stay tuned for updated information. We look forward to seeing you in February!
